There are few things in this world that can positively affect those around us, require little effort to accomplish, and stay with a person for a lifetime. A smile is one of those things.

Education and experience

As the son of a dentist, Dr. Shah learned early on to appreciate the details behind a beautiful smile and the effort required in giving someone a lifelong smile they would love.

Shah earned his Bachelor of Arts, Doctorate of Dental Medicine, certificate in orthodontics, and Master of Science in oral biology all from the University of Pennsylvania. During his time at Penn, he learned to become a critical thinker through 10 years of research, as well as gaining important leadership experience, most notably as Chief Resident of Penn Orthodontics and President of Penn’s American Student Dental Association.

Dr. Shah’s passion for the profession led him to earn additional certifications while a resident, most notably Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He also developed an interest in published orthodontic literature, and as a result, accepted the position of Abstracts Editor for the peer-reviewed journal Orthodontic Practice US.  He is a former faculty member of the University of Pennsylvania, and lectures nationally and internationally for Complete Clinical Orthodontics, Secchi Institute, and Roth-Williams Center for Functional Occlusion.

Dr. Shah continues to be a lifelong student so that he may exceed expectations in patient service, peer education, and orthodontic solutions every day.

Now that the digital revolution has happened and there are so many players in the game, everyone thinks they know what going digital means. A practice that has even one piece of digital equipment markets itself as digital orthodontics, but being digital is really an end-to-end solution. Only SureSmile doctors have that capability, and it is being 100% digital that allows a doctor to practice from anywhere in the world without having to be tied to the chair. Being truly digital means greater precision, superior results, and the power to adapt to an ever changing market without giving up clinical or operational control. In this session, Dr. Araujo shares how he took back control, became Invisalign-free in three years, and discovered a whole new way to practice.

Learning objectives:

  1. Acknowledge common fears and myths about changing aligner solutions
  2. Break bad diagnosis habits with smarter technology
  3. Change assumptions about who should own the treatment plan and how it’s designed
  4. Map out a transition plan to streamline practice operations
  5. Take back control to get better results, faster, with less doctor-chair time

Professor Araujo has lectured at some of the most important scientific events in the world, including: Annual Meeting of American Association of Orthodontics AAO, American Lingual Orthodontics Association ALOA, European Orthodontics Society EOS, and Brazilian Association of Orthodontics ABOR, SPO. Additionally, he has spoken at numerous other independent events such as Power2Reason, Ormco, Invisalign, etc. He has been working as a consultant for companies that include 3M, ClassOne Orthodontics, and the Invisalign Training Center in São Paulo.

For the past 20 years, he and his family have lived in North America, South America, and Europe. He is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Few orthodontists have had the opportunity to work and teach among the top universities in the world as has Dr. Araujo. Some of his frequent topics are Craniofacial Growth, Biomechanics & Segmented Arch, Self-ligated Systems, Orthognathic Surgery, and Invisible Orthodontics. He has also published many articles in various professional journals.

I have been working over the past 3-4 years to reduce the time in treatment for Class II (even Class III) correction. Basically, I bond the brackets on the patient and immediately a scan. I submit for a therapeutic model and order a series of passive wires. At the second appointment, I place Forsus bite correctors. After the bite correction, I scan again for the finishing wires. Class II corrections now are easy and predictable. Most of the time, I can finish in around 18 months. I have several that I have corrected in 12-15 months.

At age 17, I started my own orthodontic treatment, and from then on I had a passion for Orthodontics. I finished my PhD in dental medicine with the sole purpose of pursuing a specialty in orthodontics. I became an orthodontist and now I realize my dream every day by giving my patients the most beautiful smile.

Our profession is undergoing disruption. Not just in technology like Suresmile, but in aligner treatment, oral scanning, in-house 3D printing, and perhaps more importantly in an historic disruption of the business model.

  • Dental service Organizations (DSOs) are buying orthodontic practices, but they are also buying up the dental practices we depend on for referrals. Will this restrict our ability to attract patients?
  • Direct to Consumer (DTC) corporations have gone from non-existent to multi-billion dollar corporations in a matter of 3 years, offering low-cost, no-appointment aligner treatment developed with inadequate records and without the input of dental professionals until the final click of “approved plan”. Unsuspecting consumers flock to these business models for their price and convenience, but at what cost?
  • Marketing has become a mass media frenzy with over $300 million spent each year in direct-to-consumer marketing. How can small businesses compete?

The list goes on. So, how will orthodontists react? How can the profession survive?

In this seminar, Dr. Terry Sellke tackles the issues. Doctors and their teams are encouraged to attend this exploration of the future of orthodontics.

Born in Chicago, Dr. Terry A. Sellke is a native Illinoisan. His fervor for Illinois extends to his academic background, having enrolled in the University of Illinois undergraduate and dental school. He graduated with his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1971. Two years later, he achieved a specialty degree in orthodontics. In 1974 he received a Master’s degree in orthodontics.

In 1980, Dr. Sellke became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He still teaches orthodontics at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, where he earned the titles of professor, master clinician, co-clinic director, and master’s thesis advisor. Dr. Sellke lectures domestically and internationally on clinical orthodontics as well as another of his passions, applying business principles to the practice of orthodontics.

Dr. Sellke’s professional affiliations include:

  • Illinois Orthodontic Alumni Association, Board of Directions, Past President
  • Lake County Board of Health, Past President
  • Foundation for Orthodontic Research, Board Member, Past President

Dr. Sellke was elected to the American College of Dentists by his peers and has been a reviewer for the American Journal of Orthodontics for many years. He has published dozens of articles on orthodontics in professional journals worldwide. His text on the Bioprogressive Orthodontic Philosophy has been translated into four languages.

Dr. Gaudreault discusses his practice’s journey from a full service in-house lab to the SureSmile platform. Their Ortho-Pliance in-house lab utilized EasyRx for practice and lab work flow, and they produced clear and other types of retainers, aligners, expanders, Herbst appliances, and IDB trays with Envisiontec 3D printers. In 2014, their in-house lab had 1 full-time lab technician supporting two locations, and grew to 4 full-time employees supporting 5 locations by end of 2018. Dr. Gaudreault will present a detailed analysis of their ROI and how they scaled back the lab and migrated to the SureSmile platform.

Dr. Gaudreault attended Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, where he excelled, graduating summa cum laude (2nd overall) and received his certificate in orthodontics. He completed his general practice residency with Harvard School of Dental Medicine, performing rotations at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Gaudreault is a clinical advisory board and faculty member of SureSmile. Also, he is a clinical advisory board member of OrthoScience which is a company dedicated to providing a digital platform for gathering data for treatment modalities, promoting learning amongst orthodontic community, and growing global orthodontic treatment solutions.

As a SureSmile practice, you have already set yourselves apart from other practices. But, how should you share our story with our community, patients and referrals? Orthodontic treatment has evolved from initially simply aligning teeth, to include detailing the occlusion, and then harmonizing the relationship of the dentition to total facial morphology. But the missing dimension has always been: Where are the roots? This seminar focuses on this missing aspect of orthodontics to teach you to treat your patients more than “half-way.” Gain a huge market differentiator and provide better treatment from planning to execution.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn what’s missing in current orthodontic treatment with both aligners and fixed appliances
  • Easily integrate this knowledge into your treatment plans and therapeutics
  • Differentiate your practice to accelerate practice growth

The art of the finish is a matter of working backwards: defining your treatment goal–or goals–and then creating the plan to get there. The right arch wires or appliances, the appropriate mechanics, the anticipated tooth movement…all things thought out and planned.

From this plan I build a checklist, my step-by-step guide to the desired occlusion. Now is the time to order the desired wire sequence, with the right mechanics factored in, that will achieve efficient case progress to arrive at the desired finish with no worries.

1-2-3, right? Not always. You begin with a vision and build your plan to achieve it. Along the way, you can expect to encounter the challenging rotation, the stubborn cuspid–or the less than ideally compliant patient. That’s when the fun begins.

Learning Objectives:

1) Consistent reliable outcomes

2) Treatment Planning simplified

3) Mastering your set-ups and plans

At the end of this lecture, attendees will leave knowing:
The prevalence, epidemiology and comorbidities associated with sleep apnea (and reduced airflow)
How to screen for the spectrum of sleep apnea-related diseases, available methods for testing and how to obtain a diagnosis
Treatment options available and how orthodontists can help treat patients.

Victoria is the New Patient Coordinator at Joiner Orthodontics, and has the gift of immediately making our new guests feel at home. She is a pro at working with new patients, explaining the many aspects of treatment, setting up treatment appointments, and generally being the “best friend” of our new patients.

Victoria has a wacky sense of humor and is clearly a “people person.” She loves getting to know new people and we are certain that you will come to rely upon Victoria the way we do.

Victoria joined our office in 1997 as a talented and cheerful chairside assistant, but she’s really thrived in her position of New Patient Coordinator.

Victoria says she most enjoys the support from and high morale of our entire team. She is a good joke teller and loves to laugh in and out of the office. She lives in Watsonville with her husband (and best friend) Steve, and their children Keiran and Amelia. They enjoy traveling whenever they have a chance. Victoria enjoys tennis, softball and the time inside and outside of the office that she gets to spend with the other members of our team. Victoria says that being a mom is still her best accomplishment!

Being an early adopter is not always easy but immediately pays off if the new technology is advanced and comprehensive in its applicability. As the first practitioners in Europe using SureSmile, the almost unlimited treatment options not only changed our orthodontic treatment approach but also encouraged us to grow our practice and to open new satellite clinics. Our complete SureSmile orthodontic treatment portfolio is the basis for providing consistent treatment quality with labial or lingual braces, hybrid-, positioner- or aligner- treatment.
